It was an 8:45 morning
Time when life began
Nothing to warn me
Of the impending doom
A doorbell rings
Twice, three times
I must answer
It’s only 7:45!
Oh, no it’s not
It’s 8:45
It’s bright outside
I need to leave for school in five minutes
I struggle with the choking blankets
The entangled legs and sheets
I fall off the bed and use my head to balance
Slowly I crawl away
Dragging my sheets behind me
Slowly into the bathroom
Echoing the pain
Of opening my eyes
So slowly making myself presentable
And into the light I go
Dressed in comfort, out of style
Just hoping my brother would remember
The reasons he couldn’t get his license
The first two times
And out of the doorway
Into the street
Through the gates
To the locker
Dragging the books
And the backpack
All the way across campus!
To tutorial?
Why,
Mommy, why?
I’m going back to bed
Before the evils of education make me sleep so little
I actually hafta get up before noon.
